At a young age, kids are very curious about their surroundings. This is it is important to take precautions in the home to keep kids safe. One way of doing so is by having tamper resistant (TR) electrical outlets.
This type of outlet has a shutter mechanism that only opens when both teeth of the plug are inserted at the same time. When an object is inserted into just one opening, the shutter won’t open. If unused, the plug shutters are closed. For example, when a child tries to insert a finger, hairpin, key, or another object into the outlet, there won’t be contact with electricity. Hence, they will not get hurt from electrocution.
Parents still need to be vigilant though. Children like to imitate adults so at some point they may try to insert plugs into outlets. Make sure to keep extension cords and other small appliances out of children’s reach. Also most homes don’t have tamper resistant electrical outlets. When you’re visiting a friend or relative, keep an eye on your kids. If you don’t have children, it is still needed for the safety of the children of your friends and family that come to visit.
Another reason you should use TR outlets is that it has been mandated by the National Electrical Code (NEC) for all residences and hospital pediatric wards. The ruling has significantly reduced the number of children who are victims or electrical shock and burn.
To clarify further, TR electrical outlets are not the same as outlets with screw caps, flip covers or sliding covers. Those are mainly used in moisture-prone areas. These types of outlets do not offer the same level of protection as TR outlets. Children will be able to figure out how to open the covers and may get injured.
Replacing and upgrading to tamper resistant outlets is an option if you are concerned about keeping the young children in your home safer. Although a home owner with knowledge of how to work safely with electricity might be able to replace the outlets in their home by themselves, a safer and certainly easier option is to have an American Air electrician provide this safety upgrade for you. This may be a particularly important upgrade if you are a new parent, grandparent or have recently started having young children more frequently in your home.
